Say adieu to my moral principles and to a quite significant personal cost file for SOFP or altenatively cough up the money to renounce.Tell the bank I am a US citizen but not bother with filing taxes, FATCA or FBARS.Close my accounts at the bank and only do business with my other bank which is a practical hassle.Tell the bank i'm not a US citizen and gamble with the potential legal risks.The legal text on the document makes it so that giving knowingly untruthfull answers may count as fraud. At the time i did not know i also had an American tax residency so I said no. The last time they asked was a long time ago and back then they asked where my tax residency was. Amongst the questions asked was one if I was an American citizen, also happily informing me that i had to file american taxes. Recently one of my two banks sent me a really nosy letter demanding all sorts of personal information. Renouncing is an option but that would probably set me back even more for the renouncing-fee and having someone help me with the paperwork. Secondly i don't think I could do the paperwork for a streamlined procedures by my self so i would have to hire an accountant and the firm i contacted close to me wanted about 1500$ for the job. So why don't i file? well for starters its a matter of principle not to participate in an unjust system. Now if my understanding of the tax treaty is correct most of my local taxes count as a credit which means that I probably wouldn't nor have I ever owed the US government any taxes. I do not however support being dubble taxed by a nation where i have never lived, which i find inherently unfair.

Our taxes pay for things such as free health care, child care and public transportation which I support. I happily pay taxes in my country of residency. I have lived my entire life in Europe and haven't been in the US for almost 30 years (since i was a child), nor do I plan on traveling to the US for the foreseeable future. By my mother i was made American citizenship at birth, a dual citizenship. I happened to be born with an american mother in a European country. If this is too TLDR: please jump to 'My situation' for the question at hand. I came to this forum about a year ago when i found out I had US tax obligations and got some good advice.
